A major incident captured attention and fueled discussion this weekend in the Premier League: referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to disallow Liverpool an equalizing goal in their intense match against Manchester City. In my view, the decision is highly subjective, but not a clear and obvious error.
Initially, the ball finds the back of the net after Virgil van Dijk’s header from a corner, and the assistant referee, Stuart Burt, signals offside. The offside player is Andy Robertson, positioned in the goal area. When Van Dijk heads the ball, Robertson is almost directly in front of the goalkeeper. He then moves to his left, steps forward, and as the ball approaches him, he ducks out of its path, allowing it to enter the net.
