The main talking point this weekend in the Premier League was referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to disallow Liverpool’s equalizing goal in their crucial match against Manchester City. In my view, the decision was highly subjective but not a clear and obvious error.
Here’s what happened: the ball ended up in the net after Virgil van Dijk headed a corner, and assistant referee Stuart Burt flagged for offside. The player in question was Andy Robertson, positioned in the goal area. When Van Dijk headed the ball, Robertson stood almost directly in front of the goalkeeper. He then moved to his left, shifted forward, and ducked out of the way as the ball nearly hit him before going into the net.
