Pete Alonso, a free agent, is set to drive from Tampa to the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando to meet with teams like the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. However, the New York Mets, with whom Alonso has spent seven years, are not on the list. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns mentioned that Alonso is likely meeting with teams he knows less about and assured that the Mets will remain in contact.
This strategy is not new for the Mets; when Brandon Nimmo was a free agent in 2022, he met with other teams before eventually signing an eight-year, $162 million deal with the Mets. Nimmo stayed in Queens for three years before being traded to the Texas Rangers.
Alonso’s market activity seems faster than last year’s, when he had to sign a two-year, $54 million deal after little interest from other teams. He opted out of that deal after the 2025 season. While the Mets want to retain Alonso, they are exploring other options, including free agent Kyle Schwarber and Japanese player Munetaka Murakami.
