Free agent Pete Alonso is set to travel from his home in Tampa to the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando to meet with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and other interested parties. The New York Mets, the team that drafted Alonso and where he’s spent the last seven years, are not on that list.
Should fans in Queens be worried? Not immediately.
“We know Pete very well, and he knows us,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in Orlando. “He might take this time to engage with organizations he’s less familiar with, but we’ll stay in contact.”
This strategy isn’t new for teams, including the Mets. During the 2022 Winter Meetings, Brandon Nimmo met with the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees before ultimately signing an eight-year, $162 million contract with the Mets. Nimmo was traded last month to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien after three years in Queens.
Unlike last year, Alonso’s market is more active, unlike when limited interest led him to sign a two-year, $54 million contract he later opted out of. Although Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza want to retain Alonso, they are exploring other options. The Mets are reportedly interested in free agent Kyle Schwarber, who hit 56 home runs with the Philadelphia Phillies, and Japanese player Munetaka Murakami, whom Stearns has personally scouted.
