Free agent Pete Alonso will drive 70 miles from his Tampa home to meet with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and other interested parties at MLB’s Winter Meetings in Orlando. The Mets, his team for the last seven years, are not among them. However, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns isn’t concerned, noting that Alonso might want to meet with organizations he’s less familiar with, but they will stay in contact. This approach isn’t unusual for the Mets, as seen with Brandon Nimmo’s free agency experience in 2022. Nimmo, who eventually signed an eight-year, $162 million deal with the Mets, was recently traded to the Texas Rangers. Alonso’s market is more active this year compared to last, when he signed a two-year, $54 million deal due to limited interest and later opted out. Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza are committed to retaining Alonso but are also exploring other options, such as free agent Kyle Schwarber and Japanese player Munetaka Murakami.
