Free agent Pete Alonso is set to travel 70 miles from his Tampa home to meet with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and other interested teams during the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando. Notably absent from these meetings are the Mets, the team that drafted him and where he has spent the past seven years.
Despite concerns from fans, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns reassured reporters in Orlando, “I think Pete knows us really well, and I think we know Pete really well. I think he’ll take the time here to perhaps meet with organizations he doesn’t know quite as well, and I’m sure we’ll be in touch.”
This approach isn’t new for the Mets. In 2022, during the Winter Meetings, free agent Brandon Nimmo met with the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees, ultimately signing an eight-year, $162 million deal with the Mets before being traded to the Texas Rangers last month for Marcus Semien.
Alonso’s market seems more active than last year; previously, a lack of interest forced him to sign a two-year, $54 million deal, which he opted out of after the 2025 season.
While Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza express a desire to retain Alonso, they are also exploring other options. The Mets are interested in free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber, fresh off a 56-home-run season with the Philadelphia Phillies, and Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, whom Stearns has been scouting since last summer.
