Free agent Pete Alonso plans to meet with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and other interested parties at Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings in Orlando, driving 70 miles from his home in Tampa. However, the Mets, his team of seven years, are not among them. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns stated that Alonso is likely meeting with organizations less familiar to him and assured that the Mets will stay in contact.
This strategy parallels past Mets’ tactics. In 2022, free agent Brandon Nimmo met with the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees during the Winter Meetings, before ultimately signing an eight-year, $162 million deal with the Mets. Nimmo was traded last month to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien.
Alonso’s market is progressing faster than last year when limited interest resulted in a two-year, $54 million deal, which he opted out of after the 2025 season. Mets’ management, including Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza, expresses a desire to retain Alonso but is exploring other options. The Mets have shown interest in free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber, who hit 56 home runs with the Philadelphia Phillies, and Japanese player Munetaka Murakami, whom Stearns has been scouting since summer.
