Perratt's Standout Contender Worth a Bet at Newcastle - SCCG Management

We were unfortunately just shy of securing a good spot with our NAP Ike Sport last weekend. This weekend features three days of live racing on ITV, beginning with the opening of the Windsor Million meeting tomorrow, alongside All Weather Champs Trials at Newcastle. I’ll be covering the live ITV Saturday and Sunday cards for TXMarkets, but I have my eye on a horse with appealing odds that could be worth an e/w bet at Newcastle tomorrow.

Linda Perratt is a trainer I’ve followed for quite a while. When I began focusing on finding high-priced e/w bets, she was among the first trainers to catch my interest, though she typically competes at a lower level than this.

Stable Star

Her stable star, The Caltonian, runs here, and I believe this horse is significantly overpriced at 28/1. A 7-year-old by Swiss Spirit, he was beaten just over 4 lengths in this race last year while running off a mark of 93. He returns to try again off a mark of 88, and the last time he ran off that mark over C&D, he won (Kieran O’Neill was the jockey then as well).

The Caltonian’s last two runs, both at this venue, have indicated his turn is near. In November, he was beaten by just 2 lengths despite not getting a clear run over C&D. He was 0.5 lengths behind Heavenly Heather that day, conceding 11lbs. He receives 1lb from that rival here, yet he is 28/1 and Heavenly Heather is 14/1.

The Caltonian finished sixth over 5f here last time, finishing strongly late in the race. The return to 6f is a major plus. If he settles early and finds the gaps in the final furlong, The Caltonian could place at odds of 28/1.

2026 Newcastle Friday Tip: The Caltonian e/w @ 28/1 (4 places) NAP
