The San Francisco 49ers were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams at home with a score of 42-26 on Sunday. The 49ers opted not to start quarterback Brock Purdy, instead choosing Mac Jones to lead the team.
Jones had another impressive performance against the Rams, completing 33-of-39 passes for 319 yards, with three touchdown passes and one interception. Despite this strong showing, it wasn’t enough to overcome Los Angeles.
After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan shared that the team could have started Purdy but opted to keep him on the bench for at least another week.
“He could have gone, definitely,” Shanahan said. “I just decided to hold him, not put him in that situation. . . . I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time, so hopefully, he’ll have a chance this week.”
The 49ers have been cautious with Purdy’s recovery from a toe injury that has sidelined him since Week 4.
San Francisco’s steady performance from Jones, who holds a 5-3 record as the starter, has allowed the team to be cautious. This approach has given Purdy ample time for his injury to heal properly, aiming for a return to action when ready. Shanahan’s comments indicate that the 49ers anticipate Purdy’s return as the starting quarterback next Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
