The San Francisco 49ers lost to the Los Angeles Rams at home on Sunday with a score of 42-26. Without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, the 49ers opted for Mac Jones to take the lead again. Jones delivered a strong performance against the Rams, completing 33-of-39 passes for 319 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, but it wasn’t enough to surpass Los Angeles.
After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan disclosed that Purdy could have played, but the decision was to keep him benched for another week. “He could have gone, definitely,” Shanahan stated. “I just decided to hold him, not put him in that situation. I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time, so hopefully, he’ll have a chance this week.”
The 49ers have been cautious with Purdy’s recovery from a toe injury that has kept him out since Week 4. San Francisco has managed cautiously because of the stable performance and success from Jones, who holds a 5-3 record as a starter. This approach has given Purdy ample time to recover fully and return when ready. Shanahan’s comments indicate that Purdy is expected to be back leading the team next Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
