ELMONT, NY — The New York Islanders achieved a rare feat by winning a game in a shootout, something they hadn’t done in over a year.

Facing another potential loss after Freddy Gaudreau of the Seattle Kraken scored first against Islanders goalie David Rittich, Bo Horvat managed to equalize with a swift wrist shot past Joey Daccord. Kyle Palmieri then secured the win in the following round, giving the Islanders a 1-0 victory on Sunday night at UBS Arena.

“It was great to see Bo get that goal because we didn’t want to leave with a loss, even in a shootout,” said head coach Patrick Roy. “Then [Palmieri] sealed the win. There was a lot of pressure on Bo, but he’s meeting every challenge and deserves a lot of recognition.”

It marked just the third time the Islanders (13-8-2) won 1-0 in a shootout, breaking a five-game shootout losing streak dating back to Nov. 5, 2024, against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The win eases the frustration of the Islanders scoring only one goal in open play over their last two games, starting with a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday after returning from a successful seven-game road trip where they went 6-1-0.

“It’s unusual with back-to-back early games and no pre-game skates,” Palmieri said. “We wanted a strong start. We had some energy despite the back-to-back. It’s great being back home with our fans on a weekend.”

Rittich was dependable, turning away all 19 shots in regulation and overtime, plus three in the shootout.

“David was excellent,” Roy said. “A solid team effort on back-to-back games with a tough schedule. We discussed not wanting to lose two straight. It was crucial to deliver a performance like this.”
