On November 23, 2025, at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY, the New York Islanders secured a shootout victory against the Seattle Kraken, marking their first shootout win in over a year. Freddy Gaudreau opened the scoring for the Kraken, slipping a goal past Islanders goalie David Rittich. However, Bo Horvat kept the Islanders’ hopes alive by scoring a crucial shootout goal against Kraken goalie Joey Daccord. Kyle Palmieri then scored the decisive goal in the following round, giving the Islanders a 1-0 win.
Head coach Patrick Roy praised Horvat’s performance, emphasizing the pressure he faced: “It was nice to see Bo score that one because no one wanted to go back in the dressing room with a loss, even in a shootout,” Roy said. “Then [Palmieri] finished the deal right after that. There was a lot of pressure on Bo. But right now, he’s responding to every challenge and deserves a lot of credit for it.”
This victory, breaking a five-game shootout losing streak since November 5, 2024, against the Pittsburgh Penguins, was only the third 1-0 shootout win in franchise history for the Islanders (13-8-2). Despite low scoring, the victory was a welcome relief after a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues at the start of their homestand following a successful 6-1-0 seven-game road trip.
Palmieri commented on the team’s back-to-back games and the thrill of playing at home: “It’s weird, back-to-back earlier starts, no pre-game skates,” he said. “We just wanted to get off to a good start. I thought we had some energy off the back-to-back. We’re excited to be back home in front of our fans on a weekend.”
Rittich was lauded for his performance, successfully blocking 19 shots during regulation and overtime, as well as three in the shootout. Roy commended the team’s effort: “David was outstanding out there,” Roy said. “It was a great team effort on a back-to-back, tough schedule. We talked about it before the game. We didn’t want to lose two in a row. It was important to come with a solid performance like this one.”
