ELMONT, NY — The New York Islanders achieved something they hadn’t in over a year: winning a shootout game.
After Freddy Gaudreau of the Seattle Kraken scored first against Islanders goalie David Rittich, Bo Horvat kept his team’s hopes alive by scoring with a quick shot past Joey Daccord. Kyle Palmieri secured the win in the next round, leading the Islanders to a 1-0 victory on Sunday night at UBS Arena.
“It was great to see Bo score because no one wanted a loss, even in a shootout,” head coach Patrick Roy said. “Then [Palmieri] sealed the win. There was pressure on Bo, but he’s rising to the challenge.”
This was the third time the Islanders (13-8-2) won 1-0 in a shootout, ending a five-game shootout losing streak dating back to Nov. 5, 2024, against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The win helps ease the fact that the Islanders have only scored once in open play over their last two games, including a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday after returning home from a seven-game road trip where they were 6-1-0.
“It’s unusual, back-to-back early starts, no pre-game skates,” Palmieri said. “We wanted a strong start. We were energized from back-to-back games and happy to be home.”
Rittich was solid in his relief role for Ilya Sorokin, stopping all 19 shots in regulation and overtime, plus three more in the shootout.
“David was exceptional,” Roy said. “It was a great team effort with a tough schedule. We talked about not losing two straight. It was vital to perform like this.”
