The Las Vegas Raiders have struggled through the first 12 weeks of the season, currently far from making the playoffs.
Quarterback Geno Smith faced criticism for his performance, and his behavior towards fans is in the spotlight after he made an obscene gesture following the 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Smith apologized for his poor judgment.
“I would like to apologize to the fans [and] Raider Nation,” Smith said Wednesday via ESPN. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that. I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
The Raiders have had difficulty achieving success this season, losing their last five games, which has dropped them to a 2-9 record. Smith has been at the center of the issues as his play hasn’t met expectations after Las Vegas acquired him over the offseason.
He is tied for the league high with 13 interceptions and has been sacked 41 times, second only to Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. He also ranks 32nd with a 29.3 quarterback rating and holds an 82.4 passer rating.
The Raiders are tied for 31st in scoring at 15.0 points per game, 25th in passing yards per game (189.5), and 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5).
