The Las Vegas Raiders have struggled through the first 12 weeks of the season and are far from playoff contention. Quarterback Geno Smith has faced criticism for his performance and was recently caught making an obscene gesture following a 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Smith has since apologized for his actions.
“I would like to apologize to the fans [and] Raider Nation,” Smith said Wednesday via ESPN. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that. I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
The Raiders have dropped their last five games, resulting in a 2-9 record. Smith’s performance has been underwhelming, as he was acquired over the offseason with high expectations. He is tied for a league-high 13 interceptions and has been sacked 41 times, second only to Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Additionally, he ranks 32nd in quarterback rating at 29.3 and holds an 82.4 passer rating.
The Raiders are tied for 31st in scoring at 15.0 points per game, rank 25th in passing yards per game (189.5), and 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5).
