The Las Vegas Raiders have struggled through the first 12 weeks of the season, far from the playoff race.
Quarterback Geno Smith faced criticism for his performance, and now his behavior towards fans is under scrutiny after making an obscene gesture following the 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Smith has apologized for his poor decision-making.
“I would like to apologize to the fans and Raider Nation,” Smith said Wednesday via ESPN. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that. I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
The Raiders have struggled for success this season, losing their last five games and falling to a 2-9 record. Smith has been central to the issues as his performance hasn’t met expectations after Las Vegas acquired him in the offseason.
He is tied for the league high with 13 interceptions and has been sacked 41 times, second only to Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. He ranks 32nd with a 29.3 quarterback rating and holds an 82.4 passer rating.
The Raiders rank 31st in scoring at 15.0 points per game, 25th in passing yards per game (189.5), and 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5).
