The Las Vegas Raiders have faced challenges in the opening 12 weeks, now distant from playoff contention.
Quarterback Geno Smith has faced criticism for his performance and his behavior towards fans after making an obscene gesture following their 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Smith has since apologized to fans for his actions.
“I would like to apologize to the fans [and] Raider Nation,” Smith expressed on Wednesday via ESPN. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that. I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
The Raiders have experienced difficulties, losing their last five games and currently holding a 2-9 record. Smith has been criticized as his gameplay hasn’t met expectations since joining Las Vegas in the offseason.
He is tied for the league-high with 13 interceptions and has been sacked 41 times, just behind Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. His quarterback rating is 32nd at 29.3, with a passer rating of 82.4.
The Raiders rank at the bottom of the league for scoring with an average of 15.0 points per game, 25th in passing yards per game (189.5), and 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5).
