Evidence has emerged potentially linking Robin Severance-Lopez, the ex-wife of former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, to his ongoing legal issues. Lopez faces allegations of orchestrating an illegal gambling operation across three counties, leading to his arrest along with two others. Severance-Lopez was also detained, charged with conspiracy to invest proceeds from racketeering. She declined a plea deal that required her to testify against Lopez in exchange for leniency on racketeering and perjury charges. Her defense claims her only tie to the case is an LLC her husband allegedly set up in her name to acquire gambling assets. Accusations against her stem from Deokoran, one of Lopez’s alleged accomplices. Severance-Lopez denies any involvement.
Marcos Lopez, once celebrated as the first Hispanic sheriff, was arrested alongside two others for allegedly running illegal gambling venues across three states. His motives for becoming sheriff are now under scrutiny. Charged with racketeering and conspiracy, Lopez was removed from his position following the arrest.
Illegal gambling is a persistent issue in Florida, with operations often disguised as arcades despite the availability of legal gambling options. Penalties for such illegal activities are not severe. The investigation, starting in 2023, discovered the gambling ring, believed to have operated from 2019 to 2024. Led by Homeland Security Investigations and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the investigation has implicated multiple persons, including Lopez, Krishna Deokaran, and Ying Zhang, who allegedly ran an illegal gambling site masquerading as an arcade in Kissimmee, named the Fusion Social Club or Eclipse Social Club, serving as a front for illicit slot machine operations.
