Evidence has surfaced potentially linking Robin Severance-Lopez, ex-wife of former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, to his ongoing legal troubles. Lopez, along with two alleged accomplices, faces charges of operating an illegal gambling network across three counties. Following Lopez’s arrest, Severance-Lopez was also detained on conspiracy charges related to racketeering proceeds. She declined a plea agreement that would require her to testify against her husband in exchange for dropping racketeering and perjury charges. Her attorneys argue her only tie is an LLC allegedly created by her husband in her name to acquire ring assets. Accusations against Severance-Lopez stem from Deokoran, one of Lopez’s alleged accomplices, though she denies involvement.
Exploiting the Law
Marcos Lopez, arrested in June with two alleged co-conspirators, is accused of managing illegal gambling cafes in three states. Once hailed as the nation’s first Hispanic sheriff, his motives for assuming the role are now questioned. Lopez faces charges of racketeering and conspiracy, leading to his dismissal as county sheriff.
The Illegal Gambling
Florida faces issues with illegal gambling, often disguised as arcades, despite numerous legal options. Penalties for running such operations are not harsh. The investigation, initiated in 2023, suggests the ring started operations in 2019, continuing until 2024. Homeland Security Investigations and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement led the inquiry. Besides Lopez, others face similar charges. Lopez, with Krishna Deokaran and Ying Zhang, allegedly operated illegal gambling under an arcade guise. The operation, dubbed Fusion Social Club or Eclipse Social Club, was located in Kissimmee, reportedly functioning as an illegal slot machine front.
