Evidence implicates Robin Severance-Lopez, the ex-wife of Former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, in the ongoing legal case against him. Lopez and two supposed accomplices face charges of operating an illegal gambling network spanning across three counties. Following his arrest, Severance-Lopez was detained on conspiracy charges related to investments linked to racketeering. She declined a plea deal that would involve her testifying against Lopez in exchange for probation, which would have dropped charges of racketeering and perjury against her. Her defense claims her only link is an LLC allegedly created by her husband to launder gambling proceeds through her name. The accusations stem from Deokoran, an alleged accomplice, though Severance-Lopez denies involvement.
Exploiting the Law
In June, former Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested alongside two individuals accused of running illegal gambling operations in three states, despite his recognition as the nation’s first Hispanic sheriff. His intentions for assuming the position are under scrutiny. Lopez faces charges of racketeering and conspiracy, leading to his dismissal as county sheriff.
The Illegal Gambling
Illegal gambling, often disguised as arcades, persists in Florida despite numerous legal gambling alternatives. Penalties for such illegal operations remain lenient. The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, began in 2023, revealing that the gambling ring, operational from 2019 to 2024, was led by Lopez, Krishna Deokaran, and Ying Zhang under the guise of an arcade. They allegedly operated an illegal slot machine business from a location in Kissimmee, known as the Fusion Social Club or the Eclipse Social Club.
