Vinícius Júnior Condemns Racist 'Cowards' Following Real Madrid's Victory Over Benfica - SCCG Management

Brazilian criticizes referee for inadequate protocol

Real Madrid resumes play after 10-minute halt

Vinícius Júnior stated, “racists are primarily cowards who must cover their shirts with their mouths to show their cowardice” and condemned the referee’s inaction after alleged abuse by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory in Lisbon. The Brazilian considered leaving the field, and Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa indicated the team would support him, though they eventually continued after a 10-minute pause. Kylian Mbappé later said Prestianni should be banned from the Champions League.

Vinícius approached referee François Letexier when Prestianni made a remark after the match’s sole goal at 50 minutes. Although Prestianni spoke with his mouth covered, Mbappé supported the claim that he used the term “mono” or monkey. The referee initiated the anti-racism protocol, but following discussions among players, managers, and officials, both teams proceeded with the match.
