Brazilian blames referee for ‘poorly executed protocol’
Real Madrid continues play after a 10-minute pause
Vinícius Júnior remarked that “racists are primarily cowards [who] must bite their shirts to show their weakness” and criticized the referee’s inaction following alleged abuse from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory in Lisbon. The Brazilian considered leaving the field, and Madrid’s coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, mentioned they would have supported him, though they eventually resumed play after a brief delay. Kylian Mbappé later stated Prestianni should be banned from the Champions League.
Vinícius approached referee François Letexier after Prestianni spoke to him following the game’s sole goal scored at 50 minutes. Prestianni obscured his mouth while speaking, but Mbappé supported the allegation that the term “mono” or monkey was used. The referee indicated the initiation of the anti-racism protocol, and after discussions among players, managers, and officials, the match proceeded.
