The accurate response would have been “Don Welsh bad,” as he was the last Liverpool manager to oversee nine losses in 12 games back in 1953-54. However, the consensus was “Brendan bad,” which may raise concerns at Fenway Sports Group as they anxiously await a turnaround under Arne Slot.
The Roy Hodgson era, largely forgotten by some at Liverpool, is an insufficient comparison for a Premier League champion. Yet, there are similarities between Liverpool’s current troubles and the final 16 months of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Anfield. The 2014-15 season marked the last time confidence in a Liverpool manager dwindled. It was also when the promising progress of a Liverpool team — one that came close to an unexpected title win under Rodgers — not only stopped suddenly but also sharply declined with several new additions. FSG hopes the comparisons do not go beyond this point, as that decline was triggered by ill-advised decisions in the 2014 summer transfer window, and there is no definite proof yet that such costly mistakes have been avoided in 2025.
