Richard Fitzpatrick, in a book excerpt, discusses how Inter Milan in the early 1960s resembled a “small hospital” due to the pervasive use of drugs, similar to Juventus’s doping culture in the 1990s. Inter’s coach, Helenio Herrera, known as “HH,” allegedly experimented on youth players with drugs, according to Ferruccio Mazzola, then an academy member and brother to team star Sandro Mazzola. In a memoir, Ferruccio described the white pills’ effects, causing sleeplessness and hallucinations, leaving him feeling like a fish out of water, trembling and fearful, with effects lasting days and followed by severe fatigue.
