In an excerpt from his book, Richard Fitzpatrick uncovers that in the early 1960s, the prestigious Italian club Inter was set up for doping akin to “a small hospital.” This is similar to the reference made about Juventus’s doping culture in the 1990s. Inter’s coach, Helenio Herrera, known as “HH” in football circles, reportedly used youth team players as “guinea pigs” for his drug trials, according to Ferruccio Mazzola, who was part of Inter’s academy then and the younger sibling of Sandro Mazzola, one of the team’s prominent players.
“I can describe the effects of those white tablets,” Ferruccio wrote in a tell-all memoir. He mentioned having insomnia after consuming HH’s pills. The hallucinations made him feel like a fish stranded on a riverbank. “I was trembling all over. I resembled an epileptic. I was terrified. Furthermore, the impact lasted for days and was succeeded by a sudden, intense fatigue.”
