Lucy and Pippa Tallant have inaugurated the Crossbar in Brighton, establishing a welcoming environment for women to enjoy all types of sports. The prominent “Crossbar” sign, flanked by stylised crosses in black on the building’s white exterior, stands out just a short distance from Brighton’s Churchill Square. A narrow shelf affixed by co-owner and DIY enthusiast Lucy Tallant provides a spot for patrons to linger outside. While installing the shelf, Lucy overheard two girls speculating about the venue being a “lesbian club” and humorously posted the interaction on social media. The shelf gained popularity, with lesbians often posing next to it and sharing photos with variations of the phrase “there’s one outside now.”
