The Premier League generated £6.3bn in revenue for the 2023-24 season.
‘Challenge of fan unrest at ticket pricing and accessibility’
According to a new Deloitte report, England’s football system is experiencing “strain” due to tensions between commercial goals and supporter needs. The report highlights that uncertainty surrounding the role and scope of an independent regulator is complicating matters for potential investors in the sport.
Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance describes a thriving industry, noting that the European football market reached a record value of £32.2bn in 2023-24. The “big five” leagues contributed over £16.9bn, with the Premier League alone reporting revenues of £6.3bn. However, Deloitte warns that these figures do not fully capture the challenges faced by the sport, which is caught between its community roots and the need for continued growth. “There can be no doubt that the system in English football is under strain,” said Tim Bridge, lead partner at Deloitte’s sports business group, in the report’s foreword. He noted that ongoing reports of fan dissatisfaction regarding ticket prices and accessibility highlight the challenge of balancing commercial expansion with maintaining a football club’s traditional role as a community asset.
