Premier League achieved £6.3bn in revenue for 2023-24
‘Issues with fan dissatisfaction related to ticket costs and access’
England’s football structure is experiencing pressure due to a clash between commercial demands and supporter needs, as stated in a new Deloitte report. The study also highlights that ambiguity surrounding an independent regulator’s role and scope poses challenges for new investors in the sport.
The Annual Review of Football Finance reveals a thriving industry, with the European football market valued at a record £32.2bn in 2023-24. The “big five” leagues accounted for more than £16.9bn, and the Premier League itself reported revenues of £6.3bn. However, Deloitte warned that these figures do not fully capture the sport’s struggle between its community-based roots and the necessity for ongoing growth. “It is clear that the English football system is under pressure,” remarked Tim Bridge, lead partner at Deloitte sports business group, in the report’s introduction. “Ongoing reports of fan dissatisfaction regarding ticket costs and access highlight the modern challenge of balancing commercial expansion with the traditional role of a football club as a community resource.”
