Rank Group Undergoes Leadership Change as CEO O’Reilly Steps Down

Rank Group is bracing for a major leadership change as its long-time CEO, John O’Reilly, plans to leave his position later this month. This transition concludes an eventful era in the company’s timeline. O’Reilly led transformation initiatives that enabled Rank Group to regain stability and achieve significant progress.

O’Reilly Will Remain Involved to Ensure a Smooth Transition

The London-based gaming company announced that O’Reilly would step down as CEO effective January 29. Current CFO, Richard Harris, will temporarily fill the role starting the next day. The search for a new CEO has already begun, with the board emphasizing that continuity and strategic focus will be key criteria for selection.

Although O’Reilly will vacate daily operations, he will remain with the company until the end of the 2025/26 financial year, assisting with the transition. His departure follows nearly eight years of service, during which he successfully rebuilt the company amid regulatory challenges, pandemic-related disruptions, and evolving consumer behaviors in the UK.

Incoming interim CEO Richard Harris offers a financial and commercial angle to the role. He joined Rank in 2022 as CFO after holding key positions at Foxtons Group, Laird Plc, and Marks and Spencer Plc. As an executive director, Harris has been instrumental in Rank’s recent financial decisions, making him a steady influence while the board searches for a permanent leader.

Rank Group Must Navigate a Challenging Period

Board chair John H. Ott lauded O’Reilly’s contributions, highlighting his extensive experience and significant impact on the gambling industry. Ott credited him with strengthening Rank’s foundation and setting a strategic path for future growth. O’Reilly also played a key role in steering discussions on responsible gambling and regulatory changes during a challenging period for UK operators.

His deep gambling industry knowledge and experience have positioned Rank to advance the direction he established.

John H. Ott, Rank Group board chair

This leadership transition occurs amid broader changes at the board level. Last autumn, Rank announced the resignation of chairman Alex Thursby. This change was finalized in November with Ott being appointed as chair, enhancing the company with valuable strategic experience during this crucial period.

Despite improved trading results, challenges persist. The UK government’s decision to raise gambling taxes has negatively impacted the industry, compelling operators to review their margins and investment strategies. As Rank moves forward, the coming months will determine if the groundwork laid during O’Reilly’s leadership can endure the ongoing challenges.
