Rank Group is preparing for a significant leadership transition as its CEO, John O’Reilly, is set to step down later this month, marking the end of an eventful period in the company’s history. Under O’Reilly’s leadership, the company undertook transformation initiatives that restored stability and enabled notable progress.
O’Reilly Will Remain Involved to Ensure a Smooth Transition
The London-based gaming company announced that O’Reilly will step down as CEO effective January 29. Current CFO, Richard Harris, will act as interim CEO from the following day. The search for a new CEO is underway, with the board prioritizing continuity and strategic focus in their selection.
While O’Reilly will leave daily operations, he will remain with the company until the close of the 2025/26 financial year, assisting in the transition. His exit follows almost eight years of service, during which he successfully rebuilt the company amidst regulatory challenges, pandemic impacts, and changing UK consumer behaviors.
Incoming interim CEO Richard Harris offers a financial and commercial perspective to the role. He joined Rank in 2022 as CFO after key roles at Foxtons Group, Laird Plc, and Marks and Spencer Plc. As an executive director, Harris has been key in Rank’s recent financial decisions, providing stability while the board looks for a permanent leader.
Rank Group Must Navigate a Challenging Period
Board chair John H. Ott praised O’Reilly’s extensive experience and significant impact on the gambling industry. Ott credited him with strengthening Rank’s foundation and establishing a strategic pathway for future growth. O’Reilly also played a crucial role in guiding discussions on responsible gambling and regulatory changes during a challenging time for UK operators.
His deep gambling industry knowledge and experience have positioned Rank to advance the direction he established.
John H. Ott, Rank Group board chair
This leadership change occurs amid wider changes at the board level. Last autumn, Rank announced the resignation of chairman Alex Thursby. This transition was finalized in November with Ott taking over as chair, enriching the company with valuable strategic expertise during this critical time.
Despite improved trading results, challenges continue. The UK government’s decision to increase gambling taxes has negatively affected the sector, forcing operators to reevaluate their margins and investment strategies. As Rank progresses, the coming months will test whether the foundation laid during O’Reilly’s tenure can withstand ongoing challenges.
