Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has undergone surgery for a broken left hand. He is considered day-to-day leading up to Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders when safety Jeremy Chinn hit him, but he stayed in the game and threw a touchdown to wide receiver Quentin Johnston on the next play.
Herbert left the game for nine plays to get a hard cast and glove for his left hand. He finished the game completing 15-of-21 passes for 151 yards, with two touchdowns, an interception, and a 108.5 passer rating, leading the team to a 31-14 victory over the Raiders.
Herbert missed Wednesday’s practice, but head coach Jim Harbaugh is optimistic about his availability against the Eagles. Harbaugh stated, “He hasn’t missed a beat. Everybody back today, meetings and out on the field for walk-through.”
Herbert has had a productive season, ranking eighth in passing yards with 2,842, sixth in touchdown passes with 21, and maintaining a 94.9 passer rating. He has thrown multiple touchdown passes in three of the last five games.
Currently, Los Angeles is in the playoff race, holding the fifth spot with an 8-4 record after winning four of their last five games. If Herbert cannot play, the Chargers are likely to start Trey Lance.
