Starting next year, Major League Soccer will align with major European leagues, switching to a summer-to-spring format. Executives view this shift as a significant opportunity.
Since its 1996 debut, MLS has maintained a few constants. It remains an active soccer league with the same name, though its initial logo was replaced in 2015 with the current shield design. Of the original 10 teams, eight continue today, though each has updated its name or crest.
Another longstanding element will soon change: the league’s schedule. MLS has traditionally operated on a spring-to-fall timetable, specifically from late February to early December in recent years. Preseason begins in January, about three weeks after the championship match of the previous season. This routine has been consistent, even as additional competitions like the Leagues Cup and Club World Cup adjust the annual schedule.
