MLS Calendar Change Approaches: Clubs Strategize Exploitation - SCCG Management

Starting next year, MLS will align with major European leagues, transitioning to a summer-to-spring schedule. Executives view this shift as a strategic opportunity.

Since MLS’s debut in 1996, few elements have remained unchanged. The league continues to operate, retaining its name even after retiring its original logo for the current shield-and-kickstand design in 2015. Eight of the founding 10 teams are still part of the league, although all have updated their names, crests, or both.

One of the few constants—MLS’s schedule—is about to change. Since its inception, the league has followed a spring-to-fall/winter timeline, recently operating from late February to early December. Preseason begins each new year, roughly three weeks after the season’s championship concludes. This routine is well-established, even as additional competitions like the Leagues Cup and Club World Cup occasionally alter the yearly flow.
