New York Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor is set to have surgery on his left hamate bone, as announced by manager Carlos Mendoza on Wednesday, which will sideline him for six weeks. This timeline suggests he might return by Opening Day, though the team is hopeful he will be ready for the start of the new season.
“It varies. People are saying six weeks for return to play,” Mendoza noted. “Knowing Lindor, I’m not going to bet against him. He’s played through broken toes and a lower back injury two years ago when he could barely walk and still played. We’re optimistic he’ll be available, but we’ll wait and see.
“…Based on knowing him as a person and player, I’m confident he’ll be ready. Will it take time? I’m not sure. Fortunately, we can do various things to keep him in shape.”
The Mets will allocate shortstop reps among Ronny Mauricio, Vidal Brujan, and Grae Kessinger, who are presently at camp.
“As we continue to get information, we’ll make adjustments if necessary,” Mendoza added.
Lindor is a key player in the Mets’ lineup. In the 2025 season, he achieved an .811 OPS, hit 31 home runs, stole 31 bases, and drove in 86 RBIs. Although the expectation is that he will miss little to no time, the surgery may affect the power aspect of his batting. After losing Pete Alonso in the offseason, this could place additional pressure on an offense with less home-run capability.
“We feel good about our roster and will reassess as necessary,” Mendoza said. “We’re optimistic Lindor will be the same player. While power can be an issue post-surgery in some cases, in others, it hasn’t been affected at all. Everyone’s different, but I trust my guy.”
