Matthew Schaefer, the top overall draft pick, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Islanders. The 17-year-old defenseman is aiming to join the Islanders’ roster directly from training camp. Schaefer stated his goal at rookie camp last month, emphasizing his dedication to preparing his body and playing with NHL players throughout the summer. Despite the signed contract, Schaefer might still play the 2025-26 season with his junior team, the Erie Otters, if deemed not ready for the NHL’s demands. He can participate in up to nine NHL games before a contract year is counted, after which he will either remain with the Islanders or return to Erie. Schaefer, despite a clavicle injury in December, was the leading draft prospect, having scored 22 points in 17 games. He celebrated his number one draft pick by throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Mets game.
