Matthew Schaefer, the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Islanders, as announced by the team. The 17-year-old defenseman expressed his intention to become a key player on the Islanders’ blueline and aims to make the team out of training camp. Schaefer is determined to secure a spot on the opening-night roster, emphasizing his commitment to preparing physically and competing alongside NHL players during the summer.
Despite his ambitions, Schaefer might spend the 2025-26 season with the Erie Otters in the OHL if it is decided he is not ready for a full NHL schedule. He can play up to nine games in the NHL before a contract year is counted and could either stay with the Islanders or return to the OHL. Schaefer was regarded as the top prospect before the draft, even after a clavicle injury in December while playing for the Canadian national junior team. Before his injury, he recorded 22 points in 17 games with Erie.
Schaefer celebrated his No. 1 draft selection by throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field before the Mets faced the Cleveland Guardians.
