Former Liverpool teammates are set to face each other for the fifth time in international football, with Salah still seeking a significant victory.
On February 6, 2022, at the Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé, the Africa Cup of Nations final took place between Senegal and Egypt, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The match went to penalties. After the first three kicks were successful, Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelmonem hit the post. Mohamed Abou Gabal saved Bouna Sarr’s attempt immediately afterward, but Eduard Mendy stopped the fourth Egyptian shot from Mohanad Lasheen. After four penalties each, Senegal led 3-2, giving Sadio Mané the opportunity to secure the win.
Mané had earlier missed a penalty in the fifth minute of the game and had also missed a penalty in the 2017 quarter-final shootout against Cameroon in Franceville. “I can’t explain how tough it was for me,” Mané expressed. “I was only sleeping four or five hours a night, five hours at most. I felt immense pressure. I would go to bed and wake up at maybe 4am, unable to sleep any further… Everyone knew I was passionate about this tournament and wanted to win for my country… Thinking about this penalty, it was one of the hardest moments in my life.”
