Former Liverpool teammates face each other for the fifth time in international football, with Salah still seeking a significant victory.
The Olembe Stadium, Yaoundé, February 6, 2022, hosted the Africa Cup of Nations final where Senegal and Egypt ended in a 0-0 draw. During the penalty shootout, the first three penalties were converted, but Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelmonem hit the post. Mohamed Abou Gabal then saved Bouna Sarr’s attempt, and Eduard Mendy saved Egypt’s fourth penalty by Mohanad Lasheen. With four penalties taken by each side, Senegal led 3-2, giving Sadio Mané the chance to secure victory.
Earlier, Mané had missed a penalty in the fifth minute of the match. He also missed a penalty against Cameroon in a shootout during the 2017 Franceville quarter-final. “It was incredibly hard for me,” Mané admitted. “I was sleeping just four or five hours a night, at most. The pressure was intense. I’d wake up at around 4am and couldn’t sleep again… Everyone knew how much this tournament meant to me and my desire to win it with my country was overwhelming… Reflecting on that penalty, it was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced in my life.”
