The Cleveland Cavaliers are already grappling with injuries as key player Jarrett Allen sustained a broken left ring finger.
The injury happened during Wednesday’s defeat to the Boston Celtics. An X-ray on Thursday identified a non-displaced fracture, and the Cavaliers plan to manage it with specific treatments.
Allen was absent from Friday’s game against the Toronto Raptors and is expected to miss Sunday’s match against the Atlanta Hawks. The Cavaliers are opting for caution due to the nature of his injury.
In the first five games, Allen has averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 steals while shooting 57.5 percent from the field in 27.0 minutes per game. He has scored in double figures three times, with at least 15 points in each of those games.
Additionally, star guard Donovan Mitchell may be sidelined after leaving Wednesday’s 112-101 loss to the Celtics early with left hamstring tightness. Mitchell had been off to a strong start this season, leading the team with an average of 28.0 points and 4.4 assists while shooting 54.4 percent overall and a career-best 40.0 percent from three-point range.
Before the clash with the Celtics, Mitchell achieved 20 or more points in every game, surpassing 30 points on three occasions.
Cleveland is also contending with other significant injuries as starting point guard Darius Garland (toe) and forward Max Strus (foot) are both recovering from offseason surgeries.
As they head into Sunday’s game against the Hawks, the Cavaliers are at a 3-3 record.
