Marat Khusnutdinov scored the tying goal in regulation and the decisive goal in the third round of the shootout, leading the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. The Boston forward equalized the score at three with 4:54 left in regulation after retrieving Fraser Minten’s rebound and maneuvering the puck around Ilya Sorokin. Sorokin made 23 saves, while Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman stopped 27 shots and three more in the shootout against Simon Holmstrom, Bo Horvat, and Jonathan Drouin. The loss ended the Islanders’ two-game win streak. Despite missing in the shootout, Horvat continued his strong performance with two goals in regulation, including the go-ahead 5:05 into the third period. Anthony Duclair scored the Islanders’ first goal early in the second period.
Islanders captain Anders Lee praised Horvat’s ability to create opportunities and score critical goals. Duclair, who had not scored in five games, surprised Swayman with a spinning wrist shot 5:11 into the second period. Duclair emphasized the importance of simple play and strong forechecking alongside Casey Cizikas and Kyle MacLean.
A scuffle ensued when Nikita Zadorov was involved with Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer, leading to interference and roughing penalties against Zadorov. The Islanders missed the subsequent power play opportunity. Viktor Arvidsson’s shot, deflecting off Lee’s skate, tied the game, but Horvat quickly responded with his eighth goal of the season. Sorokin continued to impress with crucial saves, despite some misfortune.
The Bruins capitalized on a power play when Pavel Zacha scored after a sequence initiated by Sorokin’s save attempt. Horvat restored the Islanders’ lead early in the third period, right after a penalty kill, with a wrist shot past Swayman, marking his second goal of the night.
