Inter Miami’s Methodical, Messi-Centered Journey to MLS Cup - SCCG Management

From the start, David Beckham and Jorge Mas envisioned moments like this Saturday for their club.

On February 27, 2020, just before Inter Miami’s debut in MLS, I was alongside the club’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, and co-owner David Beckham during an MLS press event in New York City. Representing Sports Illustrated and my show, Planet Fútbol TV, which I co-hosted with my late friend Grant Wahl, we believed the Inter Miami story was captivating. It wasn’t just about Beckham’s impact on MLS but also the introduction of Miami and south Florida’s vibrant culture, known as the Latin American hub, to the league.

That 2020 conversation marked my second meeting with Mas and first with Beckham. I recall their excitement as Inter Miami—a project seven years in the making—was about to launch in the league after overcoming numerous hurdles. From legal conflicts with Internazionale over the “Inter” trademark to challenges in establishing Miami Freedom Park stadium, the club was finally ready to embark on its MLS journey.
