From the club’s inception, David Beckham and Jorge Mas have been envisioning moments like this Saturday.
On February 27, 2020, just days before Inter Miami’s debut MLS match, I stood with the club’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, and co-owner David Beckham at an MLS press event in New York City. I was representing Sports Illustrated and Planet Fútbol TV, a show I co-hosted with my late, great friend Grant Wahl. We insisted that the Inter Miami story was captivating, not only due to Beckham’s role in MLS but also because his new club would introduce Miami and South Florida’s unique culture – the world’s Latin American capital – to the league.
That 2020 meeting marked my second encounter with Mas and my first with Beckham. Both men were clearly excited, aware that the Inter Miami project – seven years in the making before joining the league – was finally becoming a reality after a challenging journey. They faced legal disputes over the “Inter” trademark with Internazionale and navigated political and structural hurdles in their quest to build Miami Freedom Park. Now, the club was officially entering MLS.
