The Las Vegas Raiders have faced challenges in the first 12 weeks of the season and are far from the playoff race.
Quarterback Geno Smith has received criticism for his performance and recently for making an obscene gesture to fans after the 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Smith has since apologized for his actions.
“I would like to apologize to the fans [and] Raider Nation,” Smith stated on Wednesday via ESPN. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that. I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
The Raiders have struggled this season, losing their last five games, and now have a 2-9 record. Smith’s performance has been central to these issues as it has fallen short of expectations since Las Vegas acquired him in the offseason.
He leads the league with 13 interceptions and has been sacked 41 times, which is second only to Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Smith ranks 32nd with a 29.3 quarterback rating and has an 82.4 passer rating.
The Raiders rank 31st in scoring at 15.0 points per game, are 25th in passing yards per game (189.5), and 31st in rushing yards per game (79.5).
