It’s been another hectic week for Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president spent Sunday in Rabat appearing somewhat awkward as he stood beside Morocco’s Prince Moulay Rachid. After attempting to avoid handing the Afcon trophy to Senegal’s players, Infantino took center stage again to comfort Brahim Díaz and award him the tournament’s top scorer despite his penalty mishap. Infantino assured Díaz that as FIFA president, he makes significant errors of judgment frequently without issue, then returned to his Alpine base to consider the prospects of Morocco and Senegal facing off in the Geopolitics World Cup.
Thomas Frank attributes Tottenham’s injury troubles to being ‘cursed or something like that’, ignoring the traditional remedy of a prudent sacrifice – Nick Coupland.
Best own goal (yesterday’s Football Daily letters)? Surely the scorer must forget their direction of play. I present the finest example – Haydn Pyatt.
In 2016, Sammy Ndjock of Minnesota United gave Bournemouth a 2-0 lead with a moment that became an early gif entry for ‘own goal’ – Dave Shelles.
I enjoyed learning about ‘Kacktor des Monats’ (yesterday’s letters). Perhaps Herr Arntz could inform us if the Germans have a term for ‘crappy football email of the day’? – Michael Bland.
Just to express how pleased I am that my entry was chosen as ‘letter of the day’ yesterday. Arnd Zeigler and his team were equally pleased when I informed them he appeared in Football Daily – Holger H Arntz.
While I don’t usually read or respond to your daily newsletter, yesterday’s edition sparked my ire. You quoted Timotheéeeeee Chalamet honoring the ‘English north-east accent’. As a Sunderland native, I read on, only to find he was referring to the Hull accent. Since when has Hull been in the north-east? Have you ever traveled further north than Leeds or Manchester? Understand that the north-east likely starts north of the River Tees, includes the Rivers Wear and Tyne, reaching the Scottish Borders. Within this region, there are many distinct accents, none of which a single ‘actor’ could master, take Vera for instance – Kev Richardson.
