Gus Poyet’s assistant claims a ‘moment of misunderstanding’ resulted in his punishment by the K League. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors were prepared with “La Decima” banners to celebrate a 10th South Korean title on the second weekend of November under head coach Gus Poyet. The match against Daejeon Hana became the most controversial of the season. Leading 2-1, Jeonbuk faced controversy when referee Kim Woo-seong did not award a late penalty for handball, irking Mauricio Taricco, Poyet’s assistant.
Despite VAR involvement leading Kim to award the penalty, the former Tottenham player continued his protests, resulting in a second yellow card shortly after the first. The Argentinian’s gesture of placing index fingers at the corners of his eyes was perceived as racist by Kim, who reported Taricco, 52, to the K League’s disciplinary committee.
