Gus Poyet’s assistant described a ‘moment of misunderstanding’ that led to his punishment by the K League. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors prepared to celebrate their 10th South Korean title under head coach Gus Poyet on the second weekend of November. However, their match against Daejeon Hana was highly controversial. Jeonbuk were ahead 2-1 when, in injury time, referee Kim Woo-seong initially didn’t award a penalty for handball, which angered Mauricio Taricco, Poyet’s assistant.
Even after VAR intervention led Kim to award the penalty, Taricco’s complaints continued, resulting in a second yellow card following the first. The former Tottenham full-back made a gesture by placing his index fingers at the corners of his eyes, which Kim interpreted as racist and reported the 52-year-old to the K League’s disciplinary committee.
