The Kansas City Chiefs have adjusted star quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract to create substantial salary cap space this offseason.
The Chiefs are reportedly transforming $54.45 million of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus, reducing his cap hit to $34.65 million. This adjustment generates $43.65 million in salary cap space, marking the fourth consecutive year the team has restructured his contract.
This move could significantly help the Chiefs meet the salary cap threshold, as the team started the offseason over $57 million above it. Additional contract adjustments, trades, or player releases are anticipated.
One possible candidate for salary cap relief could be star defensive lineman Chris Jones, due to a nearly $45 million cap hit in 2026. The Chiefs might restructure his contract and possibly release offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor, who has one year remaining on his four-year, $80 million contract.
Other conceivable actions involve releasing Noah Gray, Drue Tranquill, and Mike Danna to free up salary cap space. The Chiefs are in a challenging position, aiming to rebuild the team for another Super Bowl bid after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Uncertainty persists about when Mahomes will return after undergoing surgery in mid-December to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee. Mahomes expressed last month his desire to be back on the field by the season opener.
