The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract to create significant salary cap space for the offseason. The team is reportedly converting $54.45 million of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus, reducing his cap hit to $34.65 million, and creating $43.65 million in salary cap space. This marks the fourth consecutive year the team has adjusted his deal. The move helps address the team’s more than $57 million salary cap overage this offseason, with more contract adjustments, trades, or releases expected. Another potential target for cap relief is star defensive lineman Chris Jones, projected to be a nearly $45 million cap hit in 2026. The Chiefs could restructure his contract or possibly cut offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor, who has one year left on his four-year, $80 million deal. Additional moves might include releasing Noah Gray, Drue Tranquill, and Mike Danna. The Chiefs aim to rebuild for a Super Bowl run after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. There is uncertainty regarding Mahomes’ return following knee surgery in mid-December, but he expressed his desire to be back by the season opener.
