Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert recently had surgery to fix a broken left hand. Herbert is considered day-to-day ahead of Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders when safety Jeremy Chinn hit him during a scramble, striking his left hand with his helmet. Despite the injury, Herbert continued playing, throwing a touchdown pass to wide receiver Quentin Johnston on the next play.
Herbert temporarily left the game for nine plays to receive a hard cast and glove on his left hand. He completed 15-of-21 passes for 151 yards, with two touchdowns, an interception, and a 108.5 passer rating in the 31-14 victory over the Raiders. He did not practice on Wednesday, but head coach Jim Harbaugh remains hopeful about his availability against the Eagles.
“He hasn’t missed a beat. Everybody back today, meetings and out on the field for walk-through,” Harbaugh stated via Pro Football Talk.
Herbert has had a productive season, ranking eighth in passing yards with 2,842, sixth in touchdown passes with 21, and a 94.9 passer rating. He has thrown multiple touchdown passes in three of the last five games.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are in the playoff race with an 8-4 record, sitting in the fifth spot. The team has won four of their last five games. If Herbert cannot play, the Chargers will likely start Trey Lance.
