England and Arsenal forward faced challenges after undergoing a 5am surgery on Christmas Eve but feels he has returned to a positive state.
Bukayo Saka’s first major career setback offered some benefits, allowing him to come back with a clearer perspective on football and life. Spending more time with family, reading, and caring for a new puppy, Tucker the cockapoo, helped lift his spirits during three months out due to a torn hamstring that disrupted his and Arsenal’s season. However, during tough times, including surgery at 5am on Christmas Eve, doubts that all top athletes fear emerged.
Reflecting on the period, Saka says, “Looking back, I’m pleased with how I handled everything. The first two days were the hardest, realizing the need for an operation. You start questioning: ‘Will I be the same?’ as some players never return the same from this injury. Once the surgery was completed and successful, I focused on the future. I stayed positive, worked hard on my diet, in the gym, on the field, and the physios agree. I feel I’ve come back strong.”
